In order to avoid competition with Thursday night football at Jerry's, we are moving the jam location for the winter. This Thursday, Oct. 25 we will be at a secreate private home location: contact me by phone or email for details.

The jam is held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. I'll send out notices and try to remember to something on the FaceBook L.A. Old-Time music group if there is a change. NOTE that during football season we change locations so we don't compete with Thursday Night Football. Get on the mailing list toreceive up-to-date changes.

They are kind enough to let us play there, but they are not responsible for our schedule, and we are not part of an entertainment presentation sponsored by the restaurant. Jerry's is on Sherman Way 1/2 block west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, on the north side of the street. There is limited free parking in back, and metered parking on the street.

Never been to an old-time music jam? Here's how it works. People who play old-time (traditional, hillbilly, southeastern, mountain, pre-1940 country, old-timey) music sit around in a circle and play for three hours while eating and drinking. Instruments include fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele, and sometimes others. All acoustic instruments, no amplification. We play the same tune over and over until we decide to go on to another one. No one takes "breaks" as in jazz or bluegrass -- we all play together. Generally in the keys of D, G, A, and C major, with some odd modal notes thrown in. Occasionally we'll sing as well. No sheet music -- it's all by ear. Appropriate for all ages and levels of expertise. Check out the tunes from past jams, below, to hear what it sounds like.
